Teusner The Dog Strangler Barossa Valley 2021
A bold Barossa original – Mourvèdre with soul, spice, and sophistication.
Barossa veteran Kym Teusner brings a tongue-in-cheek attitude to a serious wine. The 2021 vintage—cool, even, and widely praised—offers a glimpse of Mourvèdre’s subtler side. Think mulberries, spice, resin, and red gravel, all layered on plush tannins. Feral and finessed at once, this is one for lovers of characterful reds. Grill night? Sorted.
RP93+ – “The soul of Mataro is here… finesse and deliciousness. Smart.”

Description
Teusner Wines has built a cult following by championing Barossa’s heritage varieties through a fresh, unpretentious lens. “The Dog Strangler” – an old nickname for Mourvèdre – is their cheekily titled take on Mataro, drawn from low-yielding Barossa vineyards. The 2021 vintage, shaped by a cooler and more even season, allowed for a wine of exceptional finesse. It shows the wild, earthy soul of Mourvèdre with a polished touch: deep mulberry fruit, exotic spice, licorice, and firm yet caressing tannins. Classic Barossa power, but with brains and balance.

Review: | 2021 was a cool and even season in South Australia, and the question plagues me, "How will the sun-loving varieties in the Barossa go in a cool year?" Many producers are calling it one of the best vintages they've ever worked with, and the wines I've tasted so far certainly confirm that position. So here, diving into the depths of Mataro, through the lens of a cool, even year, we have the 2021 The Dog Strangler, a wine of balance and calm, finesse and deliciousness. The soul of Mataro is here residing in the tabernacle that is the glass, with earthy mulberries, exotic spice, resin, licorice, a flick of red gravel and layers of plush tannin that settle on the tongue. Smart. |
