Description

Girolamo Russo is one of the most admired names on Etna, producing terroir-driven Nerello Mascalese from the volcanic slopes of the northern face. Piano delle Colombe is his rarest and most ambitious bottling, sourced from the very highest parcels of the San Lorenzo cru at 750m altitude. Only made in exceptional vintages, this wine embodies Etna’s full grandeur—marrying richness and restraint, minerality and fruit, structure and length. With ultra-fine tannins and luminous depth, this is a benchmark for volcanic reds.

Reviewer:Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Robert Parker)
Review:This is a relatively new addition to the Girolamo Russo portfolio, and it's certainly the estate's most important bottling. The 2019 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo Piano delle Colombe offers richer concentration and a deeply saturated color that remains luminous and elegant in the glass despite this bigger style. The wine is gorgeous, and although you need to coax the bouquet to open, especially at this young stage in the wine's lifeline, there's a lot to discover, like wild cherry, violet, sweet apricot, crushed volcanic stone, iron ore and white peppercorn. It is certainly broader and deeper in terms of structure, and its fine tannins are what will set up this wine for long cellar aging.
